The Holiday

After viewing the trailer of THE HOLIDAY I really wanted to watch this movie, because I quite like Kate Winslet, though I have not watched TITANIC (I hate Celine Dion's My heart will go on, it's like a haunting ghost).

In England, Iris (Kate Winslet) is in love with a man who is about to marry another woman; In L.A., businesswoman Amanda (Cameron Diaz) finds out the man she lives with has been accosted by his young receptionist. These two women who have been failed in love affair have never met. They meet online at a home-exchange website and swap house for a two-week Christmas holiday. This mends their hearts and leads to two love stories.

In Iris's English cottage, beautiful Amanda meets Iris's handsome big brother Graham (Jude Law) and quickly fall in love with each other, but then long-distance love has complicated their situation; Iris meets her old labour Arthur (Eli Wallach) who is a quozzie, also a retired Hollywood legendary screenwriter. She helps Arthur to gain back self-confidence by coaching him to walk, in the meantime, she alters her mind about love, and falls in love with film composer Miles (Jack Black).

This movie writes two love stories, but it obviously lays particular emphasis on the beautiful couple, because audiences would always expect something happens to them. Graham appears to have many love affairs, but a widower with two little daughters. The couple is deeply in love with each other but they belong to two different places parted 6,000 km, can they keep their relationship through long-distance? Especially when Amanda is a boss in L.A., could she give up everything and move to a small town in England? Can Graham tolerate her temper after passionately in love? The most amazing thing is his two little girls presume Amanda as their new mother and approved. At the end of the movie, the never cried after 15 years old Amanda suddenly in tears, it takes as if Graham is his Mr Right. And to my surprise, it's really funny to see Graham as a man cries like a baby. I wonder if their relationship can last long because it's built in bed.

On the other side, Iris's story is shorter. Inside Amanda's house, Iris is excited like a child. It is understandable since she is from an English countryside. As there will be a tribute night is organizing especially for Arthur for his contribution to Hollywood, Iris helps coaching Arthur to walk. In the meantime, she gets inspirations from Arthur, quits the ambiguous relationship with her old love, and starts a new love with Miles. Miles, far from handsome, is actually talented, humorous and frank. Every time Miles appears he brings us joyful time. Nevertheless, does anyone feel the love between Iris and Miles?

The relationship of Amanda and Graham is more complicated, there are lots of unsolved problems, probably will leave to audiences' fantasy. To the contrary, Iris and Miles's is simpler. Nonetheless, there is not enough time to go through their relationship, hence, "in love" can hardly be felt but good friends. This movie should be written on feminine side: romance, ideal, "true love" can overcome anything; For men, it is unrealistic and irrational. Besides, in reality can anyone exchange home and car with strangers? It's truly a risk danger.

The cast of the movie is very strong. Cameron Diaz is gorgeous and a real star, but crow's feet come out when she laughs; I like Kate Winslet the best, she is matured, beautiful and sweet (I never think she is fat), she made the grieved and perplexed back-up girlfriend so real; Jude Law is handsome and cool, but does not look like a single-mindedness; Jack Black is really not attractive but he can make us burst into laughter; of course we cannot forget Eli Wallach as the retired Legendary screenwriter Arthur, he is a bit cynical and a but cute, and looks very alike the teach I most respect.

There is another perception. The mood of this movie is very like LOVE ACTUALLY, a love story happy ending. Yet it could do better if we are able to enjoy this movie in Christmas instead of New Year.
